The Central States Archaeological Society established a quarterly journal schedule in 1954, publishing four issues per year. The first issue was released in July 1954.
From 1954 to 1958, the numbering system did not match the calendar year. July was labeled Number 1, and April of the following year was Number 4.
In 1958, a transition format was used. January was Number 3, April was Number 4, July reset to Number 1, and October became Number 2.
Starting in 1959, the current system was adopted. January is Number 1, April is Number 2, July is Number 3, and October is Number 4.
