As a visitor enters Winterville Mounds State Park in Washington County, Mississippi, they are greeted by this etching and the following: Winterville Mounds, one of the predominant sites in the Mississippi Delta, ranks amongst the most important and significant mound sites in the United States. Winterville was a great ceremonial, religious and political center to thousands of Native Americans. At bottom: An early map of Winterville (1880) depicting ramps and causeways connecting mounds.
