On the Cover: The cover photograph shows a remarkable pipe uncovered in Craig Mound at the Spiro site in Le Flore County, Oklahoma. This is a depiction of the Earthmother, and she is holding an ear of corn in one hand. Oddly, this pipe was made to be smoked from the side rather than the rear. She stands 9 7/8” in height and is made from fine-grained sandstone. This pipe was originally placed in the center of the floor of what is today known as the Great Mortuary. Today, it is part of the collection of the Museum of the American Indian, and it is featured in the new exhibit, “Spiro and the Art of the Mississippian World”, which is currently at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City until May 9. The exhibition travels in the future to the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama.
