On the Cover: This 14th century Hemphill-style pottery vessel is in the form of a beaker (cup). It has been incised with a skull motif and forearm bones, both of which are considered to be “trophy” items. It stands 5 ½ inches tall and is 4 ¼ inches in diameter. It is in the collection of the Alabama Museum of Natural History, University of Alabama, and is on display as part of the ongoing exhibition “Lost Realm of the Black Warrior” at Moundville Archaeological Park, which is located just south of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. More than two hundred exceptional artifacts are showcased in the various exhibits on display in the museum.
