On the Cover: This magnificent tripodal standing owl effigy was found at the Sandy Woods Site in Scott County, Missouri, by Jerry Davis. Within 30 feet of this owl he uncovered two additional standing owls. This owl is shown at attention, the ear tuffs prominent and the head facing forward. The wing feathers are shown as a ridge and they connect directly to the tail, which the vessel rests upon. The vessel stands 9 ¼ inches in height. See the article on page 50. photograph by David H.
