On the Cover: The Criel Mound is an Adena conical burial mound located in South Charleston, West Virginia. Originally 33 feet high and 173 feet in diameter, it was altered in the 1840s for horse racing events. It stands as one of the few remaining mounds from the Woodland period in the Kanawha Valley.
