On the Cover: This Michigan Barbed Axe was chosen to represent the state of Indiana on the cover of the Central States Archaeological Journal. It was discovered in the 1950s in LaPorte County, Indiana. The axe was originally in the collection of Dr. Warren Baker of Michigan City, Indiana, and later became part of the John Steimle collection. It is now in the collection of David Zinkie. Despite its name, the Michigan Barbed Axe is found in northern Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan, and it dates from the Middle Archaic period (5000–3000 B.C.). The axe is 8 inches long and 5¼ inches wide, and is shown on the cover at less than full size.
