On the Cover: This stone mound is one of four at the prehistoric entrance to the Hopewell built, Woodland period hilltop enclosure known today as Fort Ancient. This stone mound is aligned in a perfect square with the other three stone mounds, each 512 feet apart. While their use is unknown, they do line up with breaks in the enclosure that correspond with celestial events. These include the summer and winter solstices as well as the 18.6 year lunar cycle. These mounds were built approximately 2000 years ago. Today they are preserved at the Fort Ancient State Memorial, just outside of Oregonia, Ohio.
