Volume 49, Number 4, October 2002
On the Cover: Pioneer Florida underwater archaeologist Ben Waller dubbed this point the “Mona Lisa of Newnans” for its exquisite flaking and the beauty of the red, translucent coral material, best viewed with light projected from the back. This point, known as Big Red, was found by Carlos Taum in Hillsborough County, Florida. It is shown actual size and displays the classic bell shape characteristic of the Newnan point type. Newnan points are Middle Archaic artifacts dating to approximately 5,400 BP. This piece was chosen by the Florida society to represent the state on our cover.
