On the Cover: These two marble statues, a male (right) and a female (left), are displayed at the Etowah Mounds Historic Site museum. Excavated from Mound C, they likely represent ancestral leaders of the Etowah chiefdom (c. 1250–1375 A.D.). Both are carved from local Georgia marble and still retain original pigments and traces of copper. The statues were found hastily buried, one atop the other, with the male’s right arm broken. They are regarded as among the finest ancient sculptures from the Southeast.
