On the Cover This drawing was created especially for this issue by Ren Harvey and shows a Hopewell shaman holding an engraved circular palette, which was found at the Winchester Mound near Naples, Illinois. The disc is made from siltstone and measures 12 ½” in diameter. It is one of the earliest known palettes. It features a hand motif on both sides, similar in fashion to the Hopewell mica cutouts. Resting on the disc is a classic Hopewell monitor pipe. These are usually made from green or tan Ohio pipestone. He is wearing a bear claw necklace and has an otter fur cap on his head. The tattooing on the face is based on what can be observed on one of the human head monitor pipes shown on page 244 in the 1847 publication Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley by Squier and Davis, which today rests in the British Museum.
